Although it was a no class day, alumni and students from M20 and M21 gathered at the Anake Prasong Building, Room 401, to welcome two high level executives from P&G. It was a very special and rare occasion to be able to meet with P&G Vice President of ASEAN, Miss Joanne Crewes and P&G Thailand's Managing Director Khun Parinda Hasdarngkul.
Ms. Joanne Crewes, presented to students the topic of "Multi-Functional Leadership Model". Under this model, a successful leader would do what he/she is good at while surrounded by people who don't do well. Khun Joanne gave many good examples using her work experiences at P&G to illustrate the model. There were other
additional points in which a great leadership should do such as being a credible magnet within an organization, utilizing the expertise of others, treating people as they would want to be treated and always communicating within the organization. One of the six things, which caught our attention, is the 5 E's of leadership, which includes Enabling, Energizing, Envisioning, Engaging and Executing. This simple model is what makes P&G a very respectable FMCG company.
Khun Parinda was up next, giving us insight regarding Thais as leaders in the international arena. Due to our delicate and unique culture, there are many practices that we are taught which don’t help facilitate our leadership role on a global level. Loving and respecting our culture is a good thing, but there is a right time and right place for all. Khun Parinda mentioned 9 key steps for Thais to succeed in MNCs.
1. Listen not Hear! Say what it is you want to say! à Thais have a tendency to keep quiet, being afraid or unconfident in expressing their true thoughts. Successful people have opinions and express these opinions for the benefit of the company.
2. Content is more important than grammar
3. Have your eyes and ears open à when you see good examples, learn from them and put them into practice
4. Always do what’s right! à particularly for the company, the employees, and the society
5. Knowledge based leadership always wins
6. Understand the concept and the why, not just the how
7. Be efficient with your time and work, be punctual and be respectful to others
8. Relationships are good, but results matter more
9. You really got to be multi-national, be mobile à you learn a lot more in a truly multi-national environment so open yourself up to opportunities that arise and you will surely develop your skills in working in an international environment
It was definitely an inspiring experience to have 2 astounding professional speak to us about how to successfully work with people of all cultures. Towards the end, there was a blackout and yet the students stayed quiet and calm and attentively listened to the remainder of the presentation.
We would like to thank you Khun Joanne and Khun Parinda once again for your valuable insight. Hopefully, one day we will get to work in company environment as passionate as P&G.
